the 1986 menu

There’s been a great local restaurant at 92 Church Road since 1986 when restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas opened the legendary Sonny’s. Along the way, Sonny’s became Church Road, and then, in 2024, it became Home when Rebecca passed on the reins to two of her protogés Alan Parry and Craig Gordon.

At Home we believe that It’s the soul of a restaurant that makes it stand the test of time; Sonny’s had soul and so does Home SW13.

To mark what would have been Sonny’s 40th anniversary we are paying tribute to our restaurant’s history by offering a set lunch menu featuring some of Sonny’s best loved dishes.  And although we can’t quite match 1986 prices, we can offer brilliant value at just £19.86 for three courses.

Sonny’s  in 1986

Back in 1986 the thought that you could enjoy the sort of food you could eat in a West End restaurant in a neighbourhood like Barnes was unheard of.

And Sonny’s wasn’t just a new concept for Barnes, it was one of the earliest examples in London of seriously cool neighbourhood restaurants. Places that combined great cooking with all the joys of a regular haunt – somewhere to pop into on a cold Wednesday evening or celebrate a special event.

Sonny’s first menus combined the ethos of French bistro cooking with a new culinary style that took wing in the 80s – Modern British.

Dishes come and go in and out of fashion, but what’s really important is how good they taste. In our new iteration of the 1986 menu we’ve brought back some more of those Bistro/Modern British dishes from early Sonny’s menus, and, as you will find out when you come into join us, they are completely delicious and have absolutely stood the test of time.
